This collection consists of records concerning Clinton Administration policy and actions regarding American involvement in the Somali civil war. When he took office in 1993, President Clinton inherited the humanitarian crisis in Somalia. Though the administration initially continued the humanitarian and peacekeeping mission of Operation Restore Hope, it pulled out after the deaths of 18 U.S. troops in the Battle of Mogadishu on October 3, 1993 turn public opinion sharply against involvement. The collection includes briefing materials, press materials, correspondence, talking points, reports to Congress, and emails regarding the U.S. presence in Somalia.
