Description
This collection consists of records related to Ambassador Simons and his work as Coordinator of U.S. Assistance to the Newly Independent States of the former Soviet Union. The collection dates from January 1993 to July 1995 and does not cover Simon’s term as Ambassador to Pakistan. The Newly Independent States–or NIS–were defined, by law, as being: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan. Simons worked with all NIS countries but was heavily involved in working with Armenia, Kazakhstan, and Tajikistan.
