AFL-CIO "Ask Working Women" Event
Concluding Remarks by First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton
. Buffalo, New York
May 7,1999
Roundtable Discussion Concluding ReJ!llarks
.
.
1 want to thank you so much for. being here. I know that it has been WaIm. Maybe we'll
all lose a little weight and then say, "Well, that gy'm was a good experience for us." I really
appreciate it. I'm sorry that we couldn't stay longer and have more que~tions. I hope that we'll
be doing more of these. I know that Karen is busily planning them. ·But I would hope too that
the thoughts and ideas that came out-there were a lot of people who really raised some very
good issues. We will certainly take those: back with us to Washington, to the White House, and I
hope that there will be a similar kind of effort to try to help those of you with issues find the
help that you need.
. .
But remember how important it is 'that we try to work together, we try to listen to each
other, and we try to put ourselves in each other's shoes. Now I think that it would be a velY
good thing-not only for Buffalo, Erie Cqunty, or New York-but for the whole countlY for
each of us to just to take a deep breath anq. think, "There, but for the grace of God, go 1." How
can I tty to help somebody else? . How can I be an advocate for'the kinds of things that
particularly single moms, or stay-at-home moms, or healthcare providers, or whomever-how
can I try to think of ways to make this community work as well as it can work?
You·know, ever since I came·to Bl;lffalo when I was a young girl and my family went to
Niagara Falls-I was about eight or nine, I suppose-I've been back a number of times when I
used to have a life before I lived in the White House. I'm well (iware,of the incredible diversity
of the people here, the work ethic and the commitment 'to this community . You can't meet
anyone fi'om Buffalo, anywhere in this cOl;lntry, who isn't proud that they're from Buffalo. You
know, they'll just give you a long lecture, 'whether it's Buffalo Wings orthe long avenues, or
whatever it might be. So I hope that this has created an opportunity, not only for me to listen to'
the panelists and the people in the audience, but for. all of us to listen to each other: Because I
think that if we do that, then we're going to find some solutions to some of the problems that we
heard about today.
Thank you all very much!
