FIRST LAD¥I HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON
STATEMENT UPON ARRIVAL IN KAZAKHSTAN
ALMATY,KAZAKSHSTAN
I
NOVEMBER 11, 1997
,I
.
. I am delighted to be here in K'azakhstan. I have come to Kazakhstan and to Central Asia
to reinforce the strong, but young tied between our countries; to witness the important progress
you are making in strengthening civill society and building an economy grounded in open
markets and private enterprise; and bring a message of encouragement and solidarity from the
American people, who will stand by ~ou during this historic transformation.
td
In this beautiful city along
th~ ancient Silk road, I look forward to learning more about
the people of Kazakhstan's courageolis walk dowu'a new road to democracy and prosperity.
During my visit, I will have the oppottunity to nieet with the President and Mrs. Nazarbayev and
with non-governmental organizations; who are working to ensure that civil society takes root,
grows, and thrives. I will be able to see firsthand the role that young people and women are
playing in the economic, social, and doliticallife of Kazakhstan, as they use their voices to create
I
a new future for this country. I will alIso attend a ribbon-cutting at anew Women's Wellness
Center, where the United States has j6ined with you in partnership to make sure that women have
access to one of the most important t601s of opportunity: comprehensive health care. And
because the success of a democracy depends in large part on the full participation of women in
society, I lookforward to attending t,e Central Asian Conference on Women in Politics.
•
I want to thank President and Mrs. Nazarbayev -- and all the people of Kazakhstan -- for
their warm welcome. The United Stafes is proud of its partnership with Kazakhstan. I look
forward to strengthening the ties' benJeen our two countries, to learning about how you are
continuing your reforms, and to expl6ring new ways that we can ensure a peaceful and more
r
prosperous future for all the people ofKazakhstan and Central Asia.
