WHITE HOUSE HOLIDAY 1998 CELEBRATES A WINTER WONDERLAND
Washington, DC '- -Today, First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton announced the 1998 White
House holiday theme, "A Winter Wonderland." The White House has been decorated with
ornaments, wreaths, trees, mantelpieces, arid a gingerbread house that evoke images of a winter
fantasy.
,
,
The centerpiece of the Blue Room is the official White House Christmas Tree, an 18 12 foot
Balsam Fir from the Silent Night Tree Farm in Wisconsin. As in past years, the-First Family has
invited specific groups and individuals from around the country to create ornaments to adorn the
tre,e. One group of ornaments were designed by artists, recommended by the governors' spouses
in each of the fifty states, who designed their interpretations of holiday snowmen. The warmth
of the room is captUred with mittens and hats knitted by members of The Knitting Guild of
America, and the thrill of winter sports is depicted in colorful wooden ornaments made by artists
from the Society of Decorative Painters. The green velvet handmade tree skirt consists of
individual panels designed. by artisans from each of the fifiystates, territories and the District of
Columbia in honor of the Clinton family's first holiday season at the White House. The quilted
hunter green panels are each uniquely designed, using a variety of quilting techniques.
The East Room has been transformed into an enchanted glittering wonderland. The room has
been decorated with eighteen soaring conical trees and a traditional Advent wreath made of gold
holly, shimmering white natural branches and assorted pine cones. The mantlepieces in the
Green and Red Rooms have been designed and decorated under the direction of confectionary
artist Colette Peters. The mantle in the Red Room reflects'a Polar Bear Christmas at the North
Pole, complete with an igloo, penguins, snowflakes, and "ice-c:ube" presents. The Green Room
houses an edible Ice Palace made of white ic;ing and surrounded by a lush Ice Garden. In
addition, the Grand Foyer contains apier table with a Chri, stmas tree made of edible, festive, and,
colorful holiday packages .
. The traditional Gingerbread Hou~e, located in the State Dining Room, captures the fantasy of a
Winter Wonderland on a grand scale. The State Dining Room has been transformed into a
magnificent, edible kingdom. A mountainous forest surrounds the gingerbread castle and its
towers and bridges. Miniature v~rsions of Socks and Buddy, the Clintons' pets, frolic throughout
the kingdom in the tnie spirit of the hoiidays, while oversized versions of the pets twirl on
skating rinks. Santa Claus can,be seeriin his sleigh, preparing to depart with his reindeer and
gifts on his Christmas Eve mission, as Mrs. Claus finishes the last minute tree decorating inside '
the castle. The White House pastrychefs created this delicious and fanciful masterpiece. The
gingerbread house contains 90 pounds of gingerbread, 40 pounds of chocolate, and weighs over)
150 pounds.

*
A handmade menorah decorates the West Wing Lobby~ This menorah is on loan frorh the
Gomez Mill House in Marlboro, New York, the earliest surviving Jewish homestead in
North America. The centuries-old brass menorah embodies the spirit and faith observed
, by early Jewish settlers in this country.
Hanging in the Cross Hall is the traditional "kissing ball", which was created by a
Washington DC-based master needlepoint artist, Hyla Hurley. This year's "kissing ball"
takes the shape of Santa dressed in a winter white robe amidst woodland animals, with
'
two polar bears guiding him on his journey to the North Pole.
, . The traditionai White House creche, the focal point of the East Room, was made in, .
Naples, Italy in the late 18th century. It features 47 carved wood and terra cotta figures.
The creche was a gift to the White House from Mrs. Charles Engelhard, Jr. of Far Hills,
New Jersey and has been displayed each year at the White House since it was presented
in 1967.'

First Lady Launches Greater New York Expansion of Reach Out Read and Announces
New Efforts to Encourage Parents to Read to their Children
December 1, 1998
"There are few things that I believe could make a more dramatic difference over the next J0 years in this country than
to persuade young parents ofall educational and economic levels to take this mission ofreading to and talking with
--First Lady Hillary Rodham
their young babies seriously. "
Clinton, January 10, 1997
New research has shown that reading to children in their first few years oflife enhances their healthy
development, literally helping their brains grow. Based on this research, First Lady Hillary Rodham .
Clinton called on booksellers, publishers, libraries, hospitals, pediatricians, health centers, and
others to work together to make sure that infants and toddlers who come to the doctor have acces s
to books and are read to regularly. From her challenge, the Prescription for Reading Par tnership
was born, to coordinate and build on existing efforts -- like those pioneered by Reach Out and
Read --to "prescribe" reading to children. Today, the First Lady will launch the Reach Out and
Read Coalition of Greater New York and will announce a series of commitments by Scholastic,
another key member of the Prescription for Reading Partnership, to promote reading by parents to
their children.
Effort Will Expand Citywide Reach Out and Read Programs Across Greater New York by the
Year 2000. The First Lady will launch the Reach Out and Read Coalition of Greater New York,
which will make literacy development part of regular pediatric care for children. Throug h Reach
Out and Read, physicians and nurse practitioners counsel parents on the importance of reading
to children, volunteers read to children awaiting doctors' appointments, and medical providers
give children a new book at each well-child visit from six months to five years. The Reach Out
and Read Coalition of Greater New York represents. 27 area hospitals and community health
centers that will create 40 Reach Out and Read sites in the five boroughs of New York City, as
well as in Westchester and northern New' Jersey. The Coalition also includes over 100
community-based literacy and health-related organizations. The Coalition is committing to
"prescribe" reading to one million kids by the millennium.
'.
Scholastic Expands Commitment to Prescription for Reading Partnership. The First Lady will
also announce Scholastic's new commitments to the Prescription for Reading Partnership. First,
Scholastic will donate 50,000 books to the Reach Out and Read Coalition of Greater New York, and
will commit to donating a new book for every child newly served for the next five years. They will
also extend their local challenge grant program to New York City so that for every $5,000 raised
locally, Scholastic will donate 500 books to that area. Finally, Scholastic will expand their
multi-lingual book program to include two additional languages --Bengali and Serbo-Croatian --in
order to serve growing communities in New York. Scholastic already provides Arabic, Cambodian,
Chinese, Haitian Creole, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish and Vietnamese --each with an
English translation on every page.
•
The Prescription for Reading Partnership Responds to the President's America Reads
Challenge and the First Lady's Call for a National Effort to Prescribe Reading to Infants and
Toddlers. The Prescription for Reading Partnership responds to the First Lady's call in January,
1997 for a national partnership to build on existing efforts to prescribe reading --byprograms like
Reach Out and Read and the American Library Association's Born to Read --and the President's
America Reads Challenge to help parents be their children's first teachers and ensure that every child
can read will by the end of third grade. The national partnership, led by Reach Out and Read,
Scholastic, Inc., and First Book, includes the American Academy ofPediatrics, National Association
of Community Health Centers, National Association of Children's Hospitals and Related
Institutions, American Library Association, Random House, Irving Harris and the Harris Foundation,
Annie E. Casey Foundation, American Booksellers Association, Association of American
Publishers, Mellon Trust, Dreyfus Corporation, ABC television, Reading is Fundamental, National
Association of Chain Dr,.tg Stores, and the National Community Pharmacists Association.
