research. The Breast Cancer Research stamp will cost eight cents more than a typical postage
stamp; proceeds of this 'additional cost will be given to the National Institutes of Health (NIH)

Today,:First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton began a three-day trip to national "treasures,"
historic sites which reflect ou~ country's heritage: The "Save America's Treasures" tour is
sponsored' by the White Housb Millennium Council to Save America's Treasures, and will take
the First Lady to eleven histotic sitt:;s i~ the Mid-Atlantic'and.Northeast regions. These sites
include such places as the labbratory of inventor Thomas Edison in West Orange, New Jersey,
and the home ofrenownedU~derground Railroad leader Harriet Tubman in Auburn, New York.

The sites include artifacts, buildings, and monuments which are in need of preservation and
restoration to ensure their sm.{,ival into the next century. A special web site has been created so

The White H9use Millennium Council Logo ("Millennium Logo") was
designed and ereated to identify national projects that carry out the Millennium

Council's goals of stimulating activities and projects at the national and local.
levels to mark the new millennium in meaningful ways.

The design firm of CarboneIS mol an and Associates of New York was selected
with the assistknce from the American Institute of Graphic Arts to design the
official logo.
3.
The White House Millennium Council will designate national partners that are
sponsoring na~ional millennium projects in association with the Council.
4.
Millennium C(i)uncil Partners will consist of three types of entities: national
non-profit org~nizations, federal agencies, and intergovernmental agencies and

Washington, D.C. - - On Monoay, July 13, First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton will embark on a
tour of America's national treisures located in the mid-Atlantic and Northeastern regions. These
treasures are artifacts, buildin~s, and monuments which reflect ournatiori's heritage; all are in
need of preservation and restotation to ensure their survival into the next century. By
highlighting these treasures, tlie First Lady hopes to encourage the continued partnership
between the private sector and government to ensure that America's heritage is sustained for
future generations.
Throughout the trip, the First lLady will promote the goals ofthe White House Millennium
Council's "Save America's Trbasures" initiative, a program dedicated to protecting the nation's
historical and cultural heritage! into the new millennium. The White House Millennium Council
has been joined in this effort by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The Trust has
fonned a Millennium Committee to Save America's Treasures, made up of individuals,
foundations, and corporations. The First Lady serves as honorary chair of the Committee.
The First Lady will kick off her "Save America's Treasures" tour in the nation's capitol,
Washington D.C .. The Presidclnt will join Mrs. Clinton in an event to mark the preservation of
the Star Spangled Banner, whibh is exhibited at the National Museum of American History.
Stops along the three-day jouniey will include sites such as the laboratory of Thomas Edison, an

ornate but decaying theater in Massachusetts that has seen perfonnances by famous American
perfonners including Sarah Betooardt and John Philip Sousa, and the home of Harriet Tubman,
the renowned leader in the Underground Railroad Movement. The tour will culminate in Seneca
Falls, N.Y., where the First La~y will address the thousands gathered for the celebration ofthe
150th anniversary of the first Jomen's rights convention.

Over half of Edison's 1,093 patents were earned fromthe forty-four years Edison spent at this
location. Among the products\ developed here: the motion picture camera, the nickel-iron
alkaline battery, and the disc phonograph. Also, this site housed the world's first building
constructed as a motion pictur~ house. Over 400,000 artifacts and five million pages of paper are

housed here, including Edisonjs lab notes and letters. This site hopes to build a new visitors
center so that these valuable arfacts can be stored properly and in a climate-controlled setting.

East End Historic District and George Washington's Headquarters
Newburgh, New York

Washington's Headquarters, a state historic site, is the first-ever public preservation site in the
country. Established as a statelhistoric site in 1850, this is one of 125 different headquarters used
by Washington. He used these headquarters the longest - - over sixteen months between the
surrender at Yorktown and the!signing ofthe Paris Peace Treaty. Washington's headquarters is
part of the East End Historic District which was recognized on National Trust for Historic
Preservation's Eleven Most Eddangered list in 1996. In this district, historic buildings have been
adapted in an innovative fashidn for use as public housing. The First Lady will speak at the
Dutch Reformed Church, built~n 1835-37 by renowned architect Andrew Jackson Davis. The
church is currently owned by ilie city and in desperate need of preservation and restoration .
. The Colonial Theater
Pittsfield Massachusetts
Built in 1903, this structure is one of the finest examples of legitimate theater architecture in
America. Entertainers who ha~e appeared at this ornate theater include John and Ethel
Barrymore, Sara Bernhardt, Jolin Philip Sousa, and Rachmaninoff. The theater currently serves
. as a paint store, but the owner lias taken care to protect the objects and decor of the theater,
which have remained intact. BY climbing the theater's main staircase, guests can view the
theater's interior, including twd balconies, a 50-foot high domed ceiling with a mural, and the
box seats. By refurbishing the theater, it theater can be revived as a traditional performance
space.
Kate Mullany House
Troy, New York
As the only surviving building associated with Kate Mullany, this modest brick house represents
a strong tradition of women's uhion activity. Kate Mullany, a young Irish immigrant laundry
worker, organized an all-femald union in the 1860s. The Collar Laundry Union successfully
negotiated higher wages for thelfemale laundry workers, earning almost parity ~ith men's wages.
Kate Mullany represents one ofIthe American labor movement's earliest women leaders. The
house will receive its National ffiistoric Landmark plaque.
�Harriet Tubman Site
. Auburn, New York
Harriet Tubman lived in this area for over thirty years after assisting 300 escaping slaves on the
Underground Railroad. Tubtrlan, a renowned leader of the Underground Railroad movement,
was known as "the Moses oflier people". Located on this 30-acre property are: the brick house

where Tubman lived with her husband, the Home for the Aged which she established, and the
Harriet Tubman Memorial LiBrary, which houses historical documents and photos. These sites
represent the very few docum6nted, tangible links to Harriet Tubman that exist.

This site is the only state historic site in New York dedicated to New York's Iroquois
(Haudenosaunee) heritage. nie Site features a rebuilt longhouse and is the burial place of one of
the important figures in Iroqu9is history, Jikohnsaseh, known as the Mother of Nations.
Although the village on this site was twice destroyed by the French and Americans, the Iroquois

consider it a place of peace and associate it with their ancient culture. With help, the educational
center can be expanded to proJ,erly display Iroquois artifacts, house relevant historical
documents, and provide an apJ,ropriate setting to instruct Native Americans and visitors about
richness of the Iroquois traditi6ns. If the destroyed buildings on this site can be re-built and
protected, school children and hdults can interpret for themselves the significance of this
historical site.
Women's Rights National Hi~torical Park (including the McClintock House, the Stanton
House, and the Wesleyan Chapel)

McClintock House - - The "Declaration of Sentiments", the now famous women's rights·
pronouQ.cement penned in 1848 by such notable women as Lucretia Mott, Elizabeth Cady
Stanton, and Mary Ann McClirltock, came to fruition at this house. The creation ofthis
document was a critical step in ~he fight for legal, political and educational rights for women in
America. Although the exterior of this historical house has been renovated, the interior needs
restoration.
Stanton House - - Elizabeth Cacly Stanton, co-founder of the National Women's Suffrage
Association, lived in this houselfrom 1847 - 1862. The house is currently open to the public, but
two wings of the home need to be restored.

WASHINGTON - - First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton will travel to China with President
Clinton from July 24 - July 3, 1998. Mrs. Clinton will participate in several events focusing on
women's progress in the areas of education, health care, employment opportunities, legal rights,
and political participation, and the continuing challenges women face.

Highlights of the trip include forum in Beijing with Chinese women and remarks by Mrs.
Clinton, and a speech in Shanghai. Three years ago in Beijing, at the United Nations Fourth
World Conference on Women! Mrs. Clinton delivered a speech on women's rights. In her
Shanghai speech, Mrs. Clintori will applaud the progress for women and girls that has been
sparked around the ~orld by tl~e Beijing Women's Conference, and talk about how women in

Washington, D.C. - - First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton will participate in the announcement of
the National Trust for Historic Preservation's 1998 list of"America's.Eleven Most Endangered
Historic Places" on Monday, June 15, 1998. The event will occur at Maryland's endangered
Monocacy Aquaduct, a 19th-century engineering landmark on the historic C&O Canal. The First
Lady is interested in highlighting our nation's treasures, including these eleven historic places,
with the hopes of encouraging their preservation as we approach the new millennium. Earlier
this year, President and Mrs. Clinton launched the "Save America's Treasures" initiative, to
. stimulate a public-private partnership dedicated to preserving our nation's historic sites,
documents, monuments, and art.

permanent professional status for women in the American military. In 1948, President Truman
signed into.1aw the Women's Armed Services Integration Act, which gave women permanent
status in the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps. At the tribute, the First Lady will present
the Senator Margaret Chase Smith Leadership Award to former Secretary of Defense William
Perry, in recognition of his part in pro~oting meaningful roles for women in America's armed

TRIP TO RUSSIA, NORTHERN IRELAND, AND IRELAND
Washington, DC - - First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton will travel to Russia, Northern Ireland,
and Ireland with President Clinton from August 31 - September 5, 1998.
During this trip she will deliver the keynote address at the Vital Voices Conference, Women in
Democracy: in Belfast. On May 7, '1998, President Clinton anno'unced the Belfast Vital Voices
Conference as part ofthe U.S. government's initiatives in support of peace in Northern Ireland, '
specifically to highlight women's role in the economic and political life oftheir society. In her
address,Jilrs. Clinton will celebrate the role that the women of Northern Ireland have played in .
achieving the peace. She will call for women's full participation in building a stable, prosperous
and democratit Northern Ireland. The First Lady spoke at the first Vital Voices Conference, in
Vienna, in 1997.

Also in Belfast, Mrs. Clinton and Mrs. Cherie Booth Blair will participate in an event with
children and parents of children who have been affected by the violence in Belfast.
In Moscow, Mrs. Clinton and Mrs. Yeltsin will participate in a panel discussion with Russian
women on important issues facing women in Russian society today. Sponsored by the Russian
women's magazine Domashniy Ochag, this panel will include women from different sectors of
society who are activists in their communities. At this event, the First Lady will announce U.S.
support for additional public law clinics in Russia and related Initiatives to expand and fost~r an
independent judicial system ina democratic society. 'The initiatives will address such issues as
domestic violence, labor concerns, ana the environment. In addition, the First Lady will
announce United States support for the growing a~d vital non-governmental (NGb) sector in
Russia, and a partnership between the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and
Junior Achievement Russia promoting the economic and business education of Russian youth.
At a separate event, Mrs. Clinton and Mrs. Yeltsin will visit a women-owned clothing factory
and participate in a conversation with women small business owners. The First Lady will

Washington, D.C. -- On Wednesday, August 12, the First Lady will travel to Milwaukee,
Wisconsin. In Milwaukee, Mrs. Clinton will visit areas t1\at have been afflicted by recent flood
damage. She will tour an affected neighborhood and participate in a discussion with community
members. In the evening, Mrs .. Clinton will participate in a fundraiser for the Wisconsin
.Democratic Party. The President, originally scheduled to attend the fundraiser, will remain in
Washington as the embassy bombing victims return to the United States from Tanzania and
Kenya.
