The LIMON DANCE COMPANY celebrates its 50th Anniversary Season this year as
America's first modern dance repertory company. The Company is the living
embodiment of the movement technique and philosophy of t~eater developed by Jose
Limon and his mentors, Doris Humphrey and Charles Weidman. Their innovative
works have since become recognized as great masterworks of American dance. Ms.
Humphrey served as artistic director from the Company's inception in 1946 until her
death.in 1958, and her works have always been a major component of the repertory.
Jos~ Lim~n, born in Culiacan, Mexico, believed man could "dance as Michelangelo's
visions dance and as the music of Bach dances". He cre~ted 74 works before his death
in 1972, and through him the American male dancer achieved a new-found distinction.
Since Limon's death, the Company has produced over 50 works by more than 30
choreographers.
•
Over the past five decades, the Company has performed in all fifty states· and in over
thirty foreign countries. In 1954, the Company was the first group to tour· under the
State Department's Cultural Exchange Program, which included a 1973 visit to the
former Soviet Union.
The current group of 12 dancers is a multi-racial and multi-cultural ensemble, including
three artists who worked closely with Jos~ Lim6n. The mission of today's Limon
Company is to produce vital exciting dance theater of the highest quality, to be at the
vanguard of the international dance scene, and to provide a home for the masterpieces .
of the modern dance repertory.
PROGRAM
EXcerpts from A CHOREOGRAPHIC OFFERING
First performance August, 1944 at the American Dance Festival at Connecticut College, New
London, Connecticut by the Jose Limon Dance Company: This work, commissioned by the
American Dance Festival, is in memory· of Doris Humphrey, Limo~' s mentor and artistic
director from 1946 until her death in 1958.

THE MOOR'S PAVANE (Variations on the theme of Othello)
First performance, August 1949, at the American Dance Festival, Connecticut College by the
Jos~ Limon Dance Company. Though subtitled "Variations on the theme of Othello", this
dance is not intended as a choreographic version of Shakespeare's play. In the form of a
pavane and other dances of the high Renaissance, the legend is told of the hapless Morr, his
wrongfully ,suspected wife, the Moor's treacherous friend, and his wife .. The four characters'
portray the tragedy of Everyman, and the dance is, therefore, timeless in its implications .

University Chlldren's Medical Center and participate in, a
roundtable discussion with American doctors and health care
