STATEMENT BY THE PRESS SECRETARY
P r e s i d e n t C l i n t o n w i l l meet w i t h P r e s i d e n t Abdou Diouf o f
Senegal on Monday, May 23, a t t h e White House. P r e s i d e n t Diouf
i s i n the U n i t e d States on a p r i v a t e v i s i t .
The P r e s i d e n t c i t e d t h i s m e e t i n g as an i m p o r t a n t o p p o r t u n i t y
f o r t h e U n i t e d S t a t e s t o r e a f f i r m s u p p o r t f o r Senegal's l o n g s t a n d i n g commitment t o m u l t i p a r t y democracy, i t s a d o p t i o n o f
f o r w a r d - l o o k i n g economic a d j u s t m e n t and r e f o r m measures and i t s
s u p p o r t f o r i n t e r n a t i o n a l and r e g i o n a l peacekeeping o p e r a t i o n s .
The two leaders w i l l a l s o d i s c u s s i s s u e s r e l a t e d t o t h e
p r o t e c t i o n o f human r i g h t s , t h e c r i s i s i n Rwanda and t h e
importance o f c o o p e r a t i o n on measures f o r e n v i r o n m e n t a l
protection.

PRESIDENT NAMES AMBASSADORS TO FIVE COUNTRIES
(Washington, DC)
President C l i n t o n named f i v e career Foreign
Service O f f i c e r s t o ambassadorial p o s i t i o n s today. The President
announced h i s i n t e n t i o n t o nominate A l v i n Adams f o r Ambassador t o
Peru; Harry Gilmore, Ambassador t o Armenia; Mark Johnson,
Ambassador t o Senegal; M a r i l y n McAfee, Ambassador t o Guatemala;
and A l l a n Wendt, Ambassador t o Slovenia.
"Secretary Christopher and I have pledged t o name
ambassadors who meet the highest standards of excellence," the
President s a i d . "With these announcements today, we have done
just that."
A l v i n Adams was o r i g i n a l l y nominated t o be Ambassador t o
Peru by former President Bush i n September 1992. He has
p r e v i o u s l y served as an Ambassador i n H a i t i and the Republic of
D j i b o u t i , and was the State Department's Associate Coordinator
f o r Counter Terrorism from 1987-89. He has a l s o served a t State
as Deputy Executive Secretary and D i r e c t o r of the S e c r e t a r i a t
S t a f f , and a t several posts i n the Bureau of Economic and
Business A f f a i r s . He served on the N a t i o n a l S e c u r i t y Council
s t a f f i n the White House from 1972-74, and was Special A s s i s t a n t
t o Secretary Henry K i s s i n g e r from 1974-76. From 1968-70, he
served a t the US Embassy i n Saigon. Adams, who entered the
Foreign Service i n 1967, i s a graduate of Yale U n i v e r s i t y and the
V a n d e r b i l t U n i v e r s i t y Law School.
Harry Gilmore j o i n e d the Foreign Service i n 1962, and
c u r r e n t l y holds the rank of Minister-Counselor. His most recent
p o s t i n g was as Deputy Commandant f o r I n t e r n a t i o n a l A f f a i r s a t the
Army War College from 1991-92. P r i o r t o t h a t , he had spent f o u r
years i n B e r l i n , i n i t i a l l y as Deputy Commandant of the U.S.
Mission, and from 1990-91 at. P r i n c i p a l O f f i c e r a t the U.S.
Embassy. He has also h e l d the p o s i t i o n s of D i r e c t o r of the
O f f i c e of C e n t r a l European A f f a i r s , Deputy Chief of Mission a t
the Embassy i n Belgrade, D i r e c t o r f o r Eastern European and
Yugoslav A f f a i r s , P o l i t i c a l O f f i c e r and Deputy P r i n c i p a l O f f i c e r
a t the Munich Consulate General, and Country O f f i c e r f o r
Yugoslavia a t the Bureau of European A f f a i r s . Gilmore i s a
graduate of the U n i v e r s i t y of P i t t s b u r g h .

Mark Johnson most r e c e n t l y served the State Department as
Executive A s s i s t a n t t o the Under Secretary of State f o r
Management. P r i o r t o t h a t , he was Deputy Chief of Mission a t the
US Embassy i n Kuwait C i t y i n 1991, a p o s i t i o n t h a t he p r e v i o u s l y
held i n Cairo. He was Deputy A s s i s t a n t Secretary of State f o r
L e g i s l a t i v e A f f a i r s from 1986-89, Economic Counselor a t the
Embassy i n Kenya from 1983-86, and served i n the O f f i c e of
L e g i s l a t i v e A f f a i r s from 1981-83. Johnson, a n a t i v e of Twin
F a l l s , ID, holds degrees from Georgetown U n i v e r s i t y (B.A.) and
George Washington U n i v e r s i t y (M.A.)
Marilyn McAfee has been Deputy Chief of Mission i n B o l i v i a
since 1989, and has p r e v i o u s l y served a t posts i n Guatemala,
Nicaragua, I r a n , Venezuela and C h i l e . A Foreign Service O f f i c e r
since 1968, she was promoted t o the Senior Foreign Service i n
1984, and t o the rank of Minister-Counselor i n 1989. McAfee i s a
graduate of t h e U n i v e r s i t y of Pennsylvania, and has a Masters
degree from the Johns Hopkins U n i v e r s i t y .
A l l a n Wendt i s c u r r e n t l y the American Charge d ' A f f a i r e s i n
L j u b l j a n a , Slovenia, a post he has held since August 1992. For
the previous f i v e years, he had been the Senior Representative
f o r S t r a t e g i c Technology w i t h the rank of Ambassador. P r i o r t o
t h a t , he served as Deputy A s s i s t a n t Secretary of State f o r
I n t e r n a t i o n a l Energy and Resources P o l i c y from 1981-86. His
t h i r t y - f o u r year career i n the Foreign Service has also included
s t i n t s i n Cairo, Brussels, Saigon, and Dusseldorf, as w e l l as
numerous p o s i t i o n s a t the State Department. He holds a B.A. from
Yale U n i v e r s i t y , a C e r t i f i c a t from the I n s t i t u t d'Etudes
P o l i t i q u e s i n P a r i s , and an M.P.A. from Harvard U n i v e r s i t y .
