U.S. Welcomes S i g n i n g o f L i b e r i a Peace Agreement
The U n i t e d S t a t e s welcomes t h e r e c e n t s i g n i n g o f t h e L i b e r i a
peace agreement. T h i s accord holds t h e promise o f f i n a l l y ending
a d e s t r u c t i v e c o n f l i c t t h a t has racked L i b e r i a , k i l l e d over one
hundred thousand people and c r e a t e d over h a l f a m i l l i o n refugees.
We have p r o v i d e d over $250 m i l l i o n i n h u m a n i t a r i a n a s s i s t a n c e t o
v i c t i m s o f t h e c o n f l i c t and b e l i e v e t h e new accord can p u t
L i b e r i a back on a p a t h toward p o l i t i c a l r e c o n c i l i a t i o n , n a t i o n a l
e l e c t i o n s and c i v i l r e c o n s t r u c t i o n .
The U.S. commends and c o n t i n u e s t o s u p p o r t t h e s u s t a i n e d peace
e f f o r t i n L i b e r i a by t h e U n i t e d N a t i o n s , t h e Economic Community
o f West A f r i c a n S t a t e s , and t h e O r g a n i z a t i o n f o r A f r i c a n U n i t y .
T h e i r j o i n t e f f o r t has succeeded i n b r i n g i n g t h e L i b e r i a n p a r t i e s
c l o s e r t o g e t h e r and s e t s a model f o r c o n f l i c t r e s o l u t i o n i n
A f r i c a and elsewhere.
The U.S. urges t h e p a r t i e s t o t h e agreement t o adhere s t r i c t l y t o
t h e commitments t h e y have made. The a c c o r d w i l l o n l y succeed i f
t h e y work i n good f a i t h w i t h one a n o t h e r and w i t h t h e
i n t e r n a t i o n a l community. The p a r t i e s can p r o v i d e an e a r l y s i g n a l
o f t h e i r commitment t o t h e accord by c o o p e r a t i n g f u l l y w i t h t h e
i n t e r n a t i o n a l r e l i e f agencies i n t h e d e l i v e r y o f h u m a n i t a r i a n
a s s i s t a n c e , and we urge them t o do so.

U.S. Welcomes Signing of Liberia Peace Agreement
The United States welcomes the recent signing of the L i b e r i a
peace agreement. This accord holds the promise of f i n a l l y ending
a d e s t r u c t i v e c o n f l i c t t h a t has racked L i b e r i a , k i l l e d over one
hundred thousand people and created over h a l f a m i l l i o n refugees.
We have provided over $250 m i l l i o n i n humanitarian assistance t o
v i c t i m s of the c o n f l i c t and believe the new accord can put
L i b e r i a back on a path toward p o l i t i c a l r e c o n c i l i a t i o n , n a t i o n a l
e l e c t i o n s and c i v i l reconstruction.
The U.S. commends and continues t o support the sustained peace
e f f o r t i n L i b e r i a by the United Nations, the Economic Community
of West A f r i c a n States, and the Organization f o r A f r i c a n Unity.
Their j o i n t e f f o r t has succeeded i n bringing the L i b e r i a n p a r t i e s
closer together and sets a model f o r c o n f l i c t r e s o l u t i o n i n
A f r i c a and elsewhere.
