Dear Ambassador Kantor:
I a writing to request you to seek establishment by the
m
ministers : ot the Organization for Economic Cooperation and
Devfiiopir.ent • (OECD) of a consultative status f o r consumer
representatives within the O C equal to the consultative status of
ED
business aiid labor interests.
:
Consumers input on the trade, economic cooperation and
development concerrLS of the O C is no less essential than that of
ED
business and labor. They long have had formal consultative status
within O C through their representative committees, BIAC (Business
ED
Interest Advisory Committee) and TUAC (Trade Unions Advisory
Committeei
Yet, even i n the O C Consumer Committee,
ED
representation for consumers i s lacking. I t has been considered in
the oast, but not established.
Consumers Union believes that vigorous U.S. support for equal
consumer consultative status can result i n i t s establishment. This
democratizing change would be important to consumers and to O C as
ED
an i n s t i t u t i o n . I stand ready to assist you i n this e f f o r t .
Sincerely,
Rhoda H. Karpatkin

Description
An account of the resource

Michael Waldman was Assistant to the President and Director of Speechwriting from 1995-1999. His responsibilities were writing and editing nearly 2,000 speeches, which included four State of the Union speeches and two Inaugural Addresses. From 1993 -1995 he served as Special Assistant to the President for Policy Coordination.

The collection generally consists of copies of speeches and speech drafts, talking points, memoranda, background material, correspondence, reports, handwritten notes, articles, clippings, and presidential schedules. A large volume of this collection was for the State of the Union speeches. Many of the speech drafts are heavily annotated with additions or deletions. There are a lot of articles and clippings in this collection.
