PRESIDENT WILLIAM JEFFBRSOB CLIBTOB
U.B. RBCEPTIOB FOR HEADS OF STATE
METROPOLITAN KUSBUM
SEPTEMBER 26 1 1994
* Your excellencies, Mr. Secretary General, distinguished
guests: It's a great pleasure to welcome you to the wonderful
museum we call "the Met," which embraces the art of cultures from
around the world.
* Since last we gathered good people working together have
begun to solve some of the world's oldest conflicts. We have
witnessed the birth of multi-racial democracy in South Africa.
And in the· Mid-East and Northern Ireland we marvel as animosities
yield to leaders determined to build a lasting peace.
* At the same time, we face continuing challenges in Haiti,
Rwanda, somalia, Bosnia, and other places. One thing is sure: if
it were not for the work of the U.N., the prospects for stability
in these regions would not be as great.
* The U.N., with the full support of the u.s., is also
taking on many challenges that transcend borders, including the
environment, drug trafficking, and terrorism. We are delighted
at the great success of the Cairo Conference.
* As we enter a new era, our work has never been more
important. We face difficult problems, but also enormous
opportunities for progress. And we must be prepared.
* The members of the Security Council must do a better job
of deciding where the U.N. can play an effective role. We must
all improve our peacekeeping capacities. We must place a greater
emphasis on anticipating trouble spots, and on using mediation
and diplomacy to prevent conflict and to resolve difficulties
before they become crisis.
* The job of the General Assembly is truly unique. It is
to join together as a community to pursue the hopes of those who
founded the U.N. to create a more free and peaceful world. As we
approach our fiftieth year and look to the future, this is still
our mission.
. * We have achieved much where others said we could not. I
believe we can do more. With imagination and faith I believe we
can leave our children a world where cooperation replaces
conflict and where hope replaces hate. I pledge to continue to
work with you through the United Nations to achieve these dreams
and our common goals.
