REQUEST:
Keynote address to the National Baptist
Convention U.S.A.
PURPOSE:
This is an opportunity for the President to
generate support for his legislative agenda
from an audience of influential African
American Religious leaders.
BACKGROUND:
The National Baptist Convention U.S.A. is
largest Black Church organization in America,
with membership numbering over 9 million. It
is headed by Or. T. J. Jemison who hails from
the state of Louisiana. This years's
convention is expected to be the largest ever
because of the retirement of Dr. Jemison, who
is
stepping down after 13 years as national
president. Last year the group held its
convention in New York city and invited the
President to speak but his schedule did not
permit him to participate. The President
phoned Dr. Jemison to express his regret and
indicated that he would try to attend this
year.
�PREVIOUS PARTICIPATION:
The President spoke to the group as a
candidate in 1992.
DATE AND TIME:
The convention begins on September 5th
and ends on September 11th. Dr. Jemison
expressed an interest in accommodating
the Presidents's schedule but would
prefer he speak on September 9, 1994 at
3:30 PM.
LOCATION:
New Orleans, Louisiana.
