Xt is a great honor to share this day with soim~n~· oth~r
heroes and soon-to-be heroes of the·Oly.mpic Movement•
Dr. Walker, let me thank you for your tireless effbrts·as
President of the u.s. Olympic Committee these past four years and
for your lifetime of commitment to American and international
sports. As a coach, educator, and administrator, you have
touched the lives of countless athletes and young people,
nurturing not just national and Olympic champions but also
citizens of this country.
~
'
,
I
think all of us have been eaqer for this day to arrive.
More than three months aqo, Chelsea and I had the privilege·of
seeing the lighting of the Olympic flame amid olive, :orange and
lemon qroves and the ancient stadium at Olympia, Greece. It's
hard to believe that in this short space of time, the flame has
traveled from those beautiful Olympic ruins across Greece, across
the Atlantic, and across our country to arrive tonight and light
these Atlanta Games.
The flame that signals the opening of these g8m$s carries
much more than light and beat. It carries the Olympic spirit that
inspires athletic striving and excellence, strengthens
friendships that bridge race, reliqion, and culture, and binds
our family of nations.
~
This year, the Olympic spirit already has ·
· ed.millions
of Americans who turned out on Main Streets, in town quares, and
on front porches, to cheer the Olympic torch on its way· here. I
felt that same spirit when I attended the Winter Games in
Lillehammer, Norway two years ago, and then again at'the
ceremonies in Greece. But never have I felt the spirit· as
strongly as I do now, surrounded by this talented and dedicated
group of American athletes and leqends.
Each of you is a guardian of the Olympic spirit, whether you
are mul i le Gold medalists, veterans, or first-time Olympians.

faces I see from Lillehammer who could join us today; thank you
for the inspiration you have given and continue to give to
millions of people of all ages, backgrounds, and stations in life
all over our country.
.
.
I
To the athletes who will compete during ·these t*o weeks, I
know that each of you has already overcome many challenges and
won many contests on your way to Atlanta. America ·is proud of
your magnificent achievements and gratefUl that you·· OO'U1d · .
represent us in these Games. I hope each of you, whether you win
. gold, silver, bronze, or no medals,· will reach your·personal best
and continue to be models of hard work, personal responsi~ility,
sportsmanship, and international fellowship.
Now, it is my great honor to introduce the person our
national Olympic team has selected to carry the American flag at
.the opening ceremony. As most of you know, Bruce Ba~mqartner is
one of the greatest wrestlers in American history. He is a fourtime Olympian and comes to Atlanta having already won two gold
medals, one silver medal, and the hearts of his tea~ates and our
country. I am proud to introduce a great champion and a great
American: Bruce Baumgartner.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
The Vice President, First Lady and Mrs. Gore are also scheduled for interviews. For instance,

The Vice President will do NBC during his two visits to the Atlanta. He will do an interview
with USA Today for their weekend special Olympic supplement. On closing day, we are
scheduling an interview with the Atlanta Constitution. And we will use the Vice President's
address to Olympic volunteers on August 4 as an opportunity for a press end-game strategy -- to
talk about the success of the games, the federal, state, local cooperation.
We are coordinating a tracking system for congratulatory phone calls (President, Vice President,
