Why Lang Brown is a Community Hero
On behalf of hundreds of young people and families ofWashington, D.C.,
I nominate Lang Brown as a Community Hero Torchbearer. Lang has
modeled for this community the strengths and values of African American
men. He has supported and guided our abandoned and homeless teens to
lives of self sufficiency. He has assisted our physically and sexually
abused children tht"ough a healing process and afforded them a trusting and
meaningful relationship. He has worked to reconnect teen parents with
-----·------ their schools and to enhance their parenting skills .. He has mentored.and
provided opportunity for young people involved with the juvenile justice
system, and he has worked tirelessly for the empowerment of parents and ..the reunification of families. Lang s generosity and loving kindness has
also been present in the lives of his five children, six grandchildren, the
Washington Redskins, and the game of golf!

I first knew Wendy as a classmate at Holton-Arms
School, where she was a superlative role model. There, she
graduated cum laude, won the school's sciQnee award, was
seience club president as well as an aetive member Of
multiple other school organizations and athletic teams, and
was elected to an organization comprised of students
embodying both athletic prowess and school spirit.
In Middlebury Co~lege, where she graduated cum laude
with a biology major -- and the tennis team award for
contribution to team spirit -- she volunteered as an
ambulance attendant and a coordinator of community blood
i
···-·-·---------·drivt!Ei, was an officer and active member of the college's
environmental quality organization -- and spent one summ@r
as a full-time laboratory assistant at the National
Institutes of Health.
Since college she has volunteered extensively alongside
full-time work and/or classes (she has an M.S. in nutrition
from the University of Maryland, acquired with election into
two honor· societies, and an M.D. from Georgetown
University). Her volunteer roles have included: nutrition
counselor, family planning counselor, reader and radio
programmer for the blind, and volunteer in multiple
eapaeities for the loeal affiliate of the American Diabetes
Association, which nominated her for its Board of Directors
(the nomination was declined due to concomitant
commitments).
Currently, Wendy cares for her elderly, visually
handicapped father, widowed six months ago, while completing
an extermely demanding rQsidency in ophthalmology at the
Washington Hospital Center, Washington, DC, where she is
known for her particularly compassionate care of patients.
I ~now first-hand that she also extends this compassion to
friends and family.
In sum, Wendy tfuly embodies the Olympic spirit through
her service to others. Not only does she deserve to be
honored as an outstanding American Community Hero, but I can
think of no one who would be more appreciative of this
honor.

GALLAUDET UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT I. KJNG J~ :
A HERO TO AMERICA'S DEAF COMMUNITY
I. King Jordan became Gallaudet University's first deaf president in March,
1988, following a peaceful student-led protest. Since his installation as the
university's leader, Dr. Jordan has become the nation's chief spokesperson for
people who are deaf and hard of hearing, and as a member of the President's
---Commission for People with Disabilities, a leading advocate for disabled··
Americans.
Because Gallaudet University is unique (it is the world's only four-year liberal arts
university for deaf and hard of hearing students), its president is also in a class by
himself. On the one hand he is like every other president of a small, top-notch
liberal art university; on the other, he is a symbol to the world of what deaf people
can achieve given the opportunity. As Dr. Jordan frequently says, "Deaf people
can do anything but hear."
Dr. Jordan also is an avid runner-a marathon runner, ~ctually. For the past six
years he has run one marathon a month, which isn't bad for a 52 year-old! He and
Linda Jordan plan their vacations around marathons and this month will
participate in a race in Hawaii. He says he enjoys running because it is an
excellent way to "relieve stress and see the country."
I hope you agree with me that I. King Jordan should be included in the Olympic
Torch Relay. I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Mercy H. Coogan
Director of Public Relations

1996 OLYMPICS
COMMUNITY HERO NOMINATION
ANDREW J. STANLEY
Although his gait is somewhat unsteady from a stroke,
Andy Stanley arrives at the National Children's Center
(NCC) with a natural
energy, determination and
exuberance that motivates and delights the adults with
_______. :. .______ mental retardation and staff that he works with daily.
Andy decided that he wasn't ready to "rust out" after his
stroke over a dozen years ago, and began volunteering·
every weekday at NCC (where his son, Robert, is in the
program).
He is unfailingly good-humored and
supportive, and shares his talents and knowledge
generously.
Heroes help, inspire and strengthen those around
them--ANDY STANLEY is a hero!

I would like to nominate Zoe Bennington, to be a torch-bearer for the
Olympic Games. At her exercise studio, Zoe has created the "'Positivel
Fit" program, a free exercise program for p'ople living with HIV and AIDS.
Zoe works hours that would make most peQple shiver, yet still she finds
the time, twice per week, to teach this class,. She is a light In the darkness
for many people watching their life slip away. I think it only fitting that she
be given the opportunity to carry a light in celebration of human
achievement I know she deserves it.
