Dear Mike,
I'd like to formally renew the request you've heard a number of times from our White House
correspondent, Dina Temple-Raston, for President. Clinton to participate before the election in a
Bloomberg Electronic Town Meeting. You pick the time and place and we wili be there to provide
the President a unique opportunity to speak directly to investors about his economic record and map
out his business agenda for a second term.
The town meeting would bring together a live audience of 150 top investment professionals in
New York and a similar audience in Washington. They would be able ask the President questions
through a two-way television hookup, and 250,000 Bloomberg users worldwide would also have an
opportunity to ask questions in real time by using the E-mail system on their Bloomberg terminals.
We had a similar event in our Washington studios last year with Treasury Secretary R~bin.
to
Dina and our Washington bureau will write print stories about the event that will be
distributed to our customers rnd to some 600 newspapers worldwide. including those served by the
. New York Times news service. The event also will be covered by our 24-hour satellite delivered
television service, Bloomberg Information TV, Bloomberg Business News on National Public Radio
(500 stations), the Bloomberg Business News morning show on PBS (more than 165 stations) --and I
would imagine by the rest of the nation's media.·
Dina also mentioned that you've been trying to find an opportunity to show the president what
the Bloomberg has to offer. Our editor-in-chief, Matt Winkler, Dina and I would be available on
short notice to run the president through the same sort of presentation we gave you last year. All we
need is a phone jack with a dial tone in his office and we can do the demonstration on one of our
laptop computers. If the President sees what it is we do, I'm convinced he'd be eager to participate in
the town meeting. In addition, I'm ·sure we could find a way to get a flat-panel Bloomberg machine
installed on his desk once he sees how clear the window to the financial world it provides.
If you would prefer something less ambitious for a first interview, we would very much like
to sit down with the president in a more traditional interview before the election as well. we•re
expecting to do so with Senator Dole, which makes it all the more important for Bloomberg
customers to hear in his own words the President's plans for the economy in a second term.
Thanks and regards,
Ut- /JAChuck Hawkins

Dear President Clinton:
During your meeting with members of The Trotter Group last year you expressed an
interest in getting back together with us before the November election. Accordingly, I am Writing
to explore the possibility of adelegation of our members meeting with. you once again to discuss
some of the important issues facing Americans in this elec~ion year.
The Trotter GroW is the nation's only organization of African American newspaper
columnists. As such our gatherings provide newsmakers a unique opportunity to interface with
an important cross-section of black commentators. We'd like to meet-- at a time and place of
your choosing-- before voters go to the polls on NovemberS.
I look forward to your response.

OmCE OF THE VICE PRESIDENT
MEMORANDUM
To: Lorraine Voles, Kim Tilley
··From: Peggy Wilhide
Re: Year-end interviews
. Date: Monday, Dec. 18
Don Baer's shop has asked the Vice President to conduct a few year-end interviews. The
purpose of these interviews is to focus attention on some of the pivotal events of the year and
highligh~ the progress we are making as a nation in what has been -- at the very least -- an
extraordinary year. Starting this week, the President will be holding similar interviews with
People Magazine, the New York Times, the Washington Post, CNN and USA Today. Don has
asked .the VP do the same, albeit in different forums. These interviews can be held anytime
this week or next week.
After discussions with both Don and Lorraine, I believe the following represents the best use
of the Vice President's time, while respecting the President's media initiative.
l. Journalists roundtable: political reporters from major regional newspapers. Time
requirement: one hour
2. Columnists roundtable: political columnists. Time requirement: one hour
3. Radio: regional radio talk shows. Time requirement: one hour
. Please let me know if, and when, we can fit this into the schedule.
Jonadum Spalter is worldng on a proposal to plug us into the milinuy press. A good
suggestion raised at the meeting: the Vice President send a message to the troops via Internet.

Mike McCurry
Press Secretary
The White House
Washington, D.C. 20500
Dear Mr. McCurry:
Thank you for your prompt response to my call yesterday. As we discussed, I
realize the President is not yet a declared candidate for the 1996 election, but I believe we
can safely assume he will be.
I am inviting all candidates for the presidency to USA TODAY editorial board
visits. Our first interview, with Sen. Arlen Specter, is running this week.
As we discussed, in the interest of our mutual planning needs, I'd like to request a
similar visit with the President as well as two other commitments:
1. A board visit, either at USA TODAY or at the White House if I may be so bold as to
invite myself, prior to the major spring 1996 primaries. This would appear in the paper
much as Senator Specter's interview does in the attached example. ·
2. A second board visit prior to the general election. We would like to run full-page
interviews, as in the attached example from the 1992 campaign, with the Republican and
Democratic candidates prior to election day.
3. An election day essay by the President on why he should be re-elected, as in the
attached example from 1992.
I realize I'm asking for one more commitment than in 1992, but the season has
started early and, as you said, the two interviews give you "two bites at the apple." Besides
the interviews and column are a lot of space for a direct conversation with our millions of
readers.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Best wishes,
~~~
MEMORANDUM TO DON BAER and ANN LEWIS
FROM:
ANN WALKER
RE:
POTUS COMMUNICATIONS SCHEDULING REQUESTS
There are a few important requests for interviews with the President that have
been hanging out there for quite some time. These are requests from "friendly"
journalists who have received nothing from the administration to date.
THE TROTTER GROUP
This is a group of approximately 35 prominent African American columnists from
"general market publications around the country. They have had a standing
request for a roundtable meeting with the President since the beginning of the
Administration. They are having their annual meeting in October and it would be
nice if at this meeting they could announce a confirmed date for a meeting with
POTUS. (I put in a request last February for this and was told that it would be
done after the affirmative action announcement.)
DEWAYNE WICKHAM
DeWayne is a columnist for USA TODAY, as well as one ofthe commentators on
BET Lead Story and h'as his own syndicated show with HEARST Broadcasting.
Wickham has never been invited to the White House and has been supportive of
the President and the Administration. We should try to secure an interview with
POTUS for him and an invitation to a social event at the White House.
NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF BLACK JOURNALISTS
The last time POTUS addressed this group was in 1992 during the campaign at
which point he promised that he would be back to speak to them if he were elected
President. That has not happened since we've been in office --three conventions
have passed and we declined each of these speaking requests. (Actually, we did a
satellite feed to the convention in Atlanta last year but that won us little praise.)
We need to develop a strategy to target these key journalists and bring them into
the fold before 1996.
Let's discuss next steps on these issues. Thanks in advance for your attention to
these matters.
FROM:
ANN WALKER
RE:
MEDIA OPPORTUNITY
We are recommending that the President participate in a roundtable discussion
this month with members of the Trotter Group. This is a group of 40 African
American columnists who write for general market publications throughout the
country. This could be scheduled immediately and would require approximately
90 minutes of the President's time. We expect to have approximately 20
participants from the Trotter Group.
The Trotter Group was founded three years ago by DeWayne Wickham of USA
Today, Les Payne ofNewsday and Derrick Jackson ofthe Boston Globe. These
three continue to chair the group which is made up largely of op ed and editorial
page columnists. Members include Dorothy Gillium, Donna Britt, Barbara
Reynolds and many others. (We will have a complete list tomorrow)
This is an opportunity for us to reach a large and broad audience at a time when
the Administration needs strong public support on the Dr. Foster nomination.
The Trotter Group is likely to be sympathetic as well as supportive. This meeting
will also be an opportunity to discuss, during Black History Month, our
accomplishments in the Mrican American community.
Golf Interviews
11 September 1995
Golf Digest
Contact: Jerry Tardy
PH: 203/373-7191
They have three areas of interest:
1. The restoration of the Eisenhower putting green.
They would like their own photographers to shoot it, because
of their particular expertise in photographing grass. They would
prefer to have the President on the green at the time, but it is
not crucial.
2. A swing sequence photograph of the President.
This requires the President to hit 6 balls from tees that
are placed right next to each other, probably in the middle of a
fairway. They have to set up the shot ahead of time, and the
concern is with the backdrop being green, rather than a
clubhouse.
3. An interview with the President while he plays a round
of golf. He said they don't want someone to play with him {a la
Sports Illustrated) but just to tag along. 18 is ideal, 9 is ok.
Golfweek
Contact: Bradley Klein
PH: 860/243-0866
See attached letter.
His focus is almost exclusively on the putting green, its design
and construction, etc. . . Wants to interview POTUS, ideally,
for about 5 five minutes, but more than that he wants to
interview the greenskeepers. He also requires color slides of
the green. He does not care if they are provided or if he takes
them.
FYI, he once wrote what he described as a positive article
that described the effects of the President's tax plan on golf·
clubs.
Dear Mr.
This is to put in writing the requests that Golf nigest would like to make of
President Clinton.
(1) White House Putting Green: We request permission to
have a golf course
photographer shoot the new putting green at the White House. Ideally, Mr. Clinton
would be putting in the photos. We prefer to use one of our phntographers who is
more accustomed to shooting. golf landscapes.
(2) Swing sequence of President Clinton: We would Jike to have one of our
photographers shoot a motorized, high speed swing sequence of Mr. Clinton hitting a
ball with his driver. The photos would mjuirc Mr. Clinton to hit nine halls (three each
from three different directions) at a golf course before a round. Our photographer
would set up the backgrounds, lighting, etc., in advance, and the shout would take
about lO minutes. We would make prints of the Rwings for Mr. Clinton's personal use~
and we would have one of our "name" teaching pros. like David Leadbetter, do the
analysis.
(3) Golf interview with the President: We would like to have one of our senior
editors interview Mr. CUnlon, asking goJf questions, while accompanying him during a
round of golf. Ideally, our writer would ride in the cart with the President for 18
holes~ Our writer would not play golf.
Please Jet me know if there is any further information I can provide. Thank you
