CAROL H. RASCO
ACCEPTANCE REMARKS ,

I
January 14, 1993
1
I welcome the opportunity today to join the 'C1inton White House
team. I know what teamwork means when working for Bill Clinton
I've been a part of such a team for 11 years and I firmly believe
in the approach--it works!
I consider myself fortunate to be continuing not only a
professional working relationship with both the C1into~s but also
valued shared experiences as friends and , parents.
In addition to the C1intons, I acknowledge with gratitude today
three individuals whose significant roles in my life have helped
to prepare me for the job I am about to undertake.
Mildred Barnes Hampton - my mentor, my g+andmother.
She nurtured self-confidence, a belief i~ myself developed in me
a deep love of learning
inspired me to have vision of all the many possibilities
before me
instilled in me the understanding that all people are of
great worth, are unique individuals worthy of respect.
I wish for all Americans young and old, the opportunity for
meaningful mentoring relationships which pro~ote vision and hope,
excitement and service.
I acknowledge my two children, Hamp and Mary-Margaret--they both
have taught me and continue to teach me about the enormous
capabilities of all people, children's eagerness to learn and
explore their world, and above all, you two have taught me the
meed for and the exquisite beauty of parental-child love.
I wish for every child this kind of relationship whether in a two
parent family, a single parent household, foster care, relative
care--whatever the configuration. But these primary caretakers
must be empowered in their ability to be nurturing through
economic security, health care coverage, meaningful education for
their children and themselves as well as other quality,
accessible services.
These wishes are not new concepts, we know and have known of the
need for them. We now must embark with new vigor and dedication
to fulfill these "wishes" for our country's citizens and I pledge
my full energies to it.
