The Whi, te Ho,use
Washington~· D.C. 20500
·Dear Carol:
Each year since being ~~lected to Congress, I have had the great
pleasure of sponsoring an intern p~ogram which I believe is very
special. One junior student from each of the high schools in my
Congressional District in Houston is selected by their peers and
teachers to visit Washington for a week of in-depth study of the
operation of our federal government. This program has been
. tremendously success full in its twenty-two year existence -primarily because our nation's leaders have demonstrated a.
willingness to share their thoughts and insights with these young_
1
high school representalti ves. . Last year they were able to meet
with many government leaders including Cabinet officials,
military offiCers, exebutive branch emp],.oyees and manyMembers of
Congress.

purpose of my letter is to ask if you would be able to spend
a short time with the~e young men and womeni at a time and place
convenient tb you, du~ing their upcoming trip to Washington.
There will be 24 students participating in this year's program,
and they will be here fiom March 14th ~ 18th.
I know that an
opportunity to meet with you would mean a great deal to them.
It
has been my hope that this exposure will help foster an
understrinding that ou~ ~overnment is accessi~le -- and to make
th.em feel a greater. se. nse of participation_in our democratic
process.
1
I would very much app~eciate your asking a member of your staff
to call Noelle Montano in my office at 225-2571 to let us know if
you'll be able to par~icipate in the program. Thanks so much for
your consid~ration of this request, and with best 'wishes,
Member of Congress
