Dear Ivis. Rasco:
We are writing to invite you to a lecture forum focused on the
topic HEALTH CARE:
THE SPIRITUAL DIMENSION.
It will be held
Friday, March 4, at 12:30 p.m. at the National Press Club.
This
event is being sponsored by our church as a contribution to the
current national consideration of health care reform.
As with most Americans, we __are deeply concerned about the
subject of health care in this cquhtry and we believe we may have
a perspective on the subject which, to this point, has not received·
much attention. We feel that there is a spiritual aspect to health
which is the primary determinant in everyone's well-being.
As
Congress and the Administration grapple wi.th the issue of health
care reform, we believe it is important to include a discussion of
the spiritual facets of health care at this time.
The speaker who will address these issues is David C. Driver,
C.S.B., of Seattle, Washington.
Mr. Driver is an experienced
Christian Science practitioner, teacher, and lecturer. He will be
introduced by Congressman Robert Goodlatte of Roanoke, Virginia.
Mr. Driver has been involved in the healing of individuals by
spiritual means for many years and he will discuss some of his
experiences in this regard during his presentation.
We look forward to having you join us on Friday, March 4, at
12:30 p.m., in the ballroom of the National Press Club (13th Floor,
National Press Building, 14th and F Streets, N.W.).
The program
will last about an hour. If you have any questions or need further
information, please contact Ms. Sandy Mathiesen at 202-544-7311.

bear Ms·. Rasco:
As a member of the New York Junior League I was
thrilled to see the recent article in JUNIOR
LEAGUE REVIEW, depicting the roles of women in key
policy making positions. It is important to know that
League members are powerful contributors to the
President and are doing so in increasing numbers.

I was particularly moved by your comments and
receptivity toward hearing from people who have
worthwhile contributions to ·make. And, I hope I
fall into that category.
I am very concerned about the education of our children,
particularly the education of young girls and·women. Today,
more than ever, we are faced with a growing number of young
girls who have severe sel.f-esteem problems. Self-esteem
hits at the core of who we are, how we feel about ourselves,
our bodies, our future -- our iives. Young girls today
don't value themselves and they get no support :(rom
traditional sources, eg. the home, church or school.
We must help young girls build the confidence they need to
succeed. And we've got to start at school, with curricula
that includes information about women contributors to our
so9iety. Women who can serve as role models to girls, the
same way such. role modeling is developed in young boys -through books.: The e.ducation process has got to include
vehic;:les that provide the means for young girls to grasp
onto and hold the power of, the self. And teachers must be
encourage to include woin.en .in their· curricula even if
historians.are afraid to include.them in our heritage.
Today, while stories about.:woinen are left out ·of American
history books and out of the- classroom, one program has been
created to help young girls develop the inner strengths
necessary for successful life patterns. Through an
arts-education program developed as a play, young girls {and
boys--they need to hear it too) will learn about creativity,
discipline, responsibility and action: all of which are
reqUired to achieve a goal. This play is called CHALLENGE
HER.
-CHALLENGE HER is about the courage, c;:haracter and deeds of
hundreds of women who. have made significant contributions to
our country. Women who have gone unrecognized, unreported
and are not mentioned in American history books. Women who
are unsung heroes.
·
·
QUEENS THEATRE IN THE PARK IS A PROGRAM OF QUEENS COUNCIL ON THE ARTS AND IS LOCATED IN THE NEW YORK STATE PAVILION.
.
OF THE 1964 WORLD'S FAIR IN FLUSHING MEADOWS CORONA PARK.
THIS FACILITY IS OWNED BY THE CITY OF NEW YORK, WHICH HAS CONTRIBUTED PUBLIC FUNDS TO ITS MAINTENANCE AND IMPROVEMENT.
\.
••
The play which has been written for 5th to 12th graders ·
will mesmerize any audience. Schools participating in the
program receive instruction manuals that will help teachers
develop in-class discussion around the play's theme -significant women who have been ·left out of history books.
CHALLENGE HER was developed for WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH by the
Queens Council on the Arts, Queens Theatre in the Park and
Artsgenesis. This program embodies the objectives of GOALS
2000 and can serve as a viable tool for showing the
important relationship between art and education by the
Administration.
To that end, we have written Mrs. Clinton not only to seek
her support, but her involvement during our opening
·
ceremony which·takes place March 3, 1994, 9:00AM, at Queens
Theatre in the Park. In' an opening ceremony that will be
hosted by Borough President Claire Shulman, the play will
premiere before Queens' students and invited guests: Mrs.
Matilda Cuomo, Jane Alexander, Queens' State Assemblymen,
representatives from the city Departments of Culture and
Education, and women in key business and government
positions from New York and throughout the country.
We would love to have Mrs. Clinton join us. More than
anything else her presence would send.a compelling message:
that women, past and present, are important to the very
fabric of our society; that their contributions and roles
should not, must not be questioned or held with disregard.
And certainly, they must not be kept hidden from our
children.
Keeping the.many contributions that women have made a
"secret" continues the myth that.women are second-class
citizens. It helps to keep young girls, pregnant, out of
school, exposed to crime, abuse and more importantly
convinced that they cannot or should not be important
contributors to society ~- their families and themselves.
I've enclosed some information that I hope you will review.
And, I hope·you can talk to Mrs. Clinton about CHALLENGE
HER. · This play can serve as a vehicle for change. It can
show how important both art and education can be to
America's future •

QUEEN·s COUNCIL' ON THE ARTS
in association with
ARTSGENESIS
and
QUEENS.THEATRE IN THE PARK
presents the World Premiere of
CHALLENGE HER
·In celebration of Women's History Month
In March 1994 the stories of eleven women who have played significant roles in our American
heritage will come to ·life on stage at the newly refurbished Queens Theatre in the Park.
CHALLENGE HER
... and she will rescue Chinese-American women from slavery
... and she will recruit 100,000 soldiers
... and she will win three Olympic Gold Medals
...and she will devise a crucial Civil War battle strategy
... and she will orbit the earth!
CHALLENGE HER tells true stories about women from history 'and bridges them to presentday contributors. Through education and example it seeks to inspire young women to prepare
themselves for leadership positions. The play will be performed by a professional multi-cultural
corripany under the direction of Artsgenesis .
...... ,
Through the lens of the performing .arts,.·.' ~fudents can examine values, explore courageous
decisions, and learn that decisions, discipline, action and creativity are required in the process
of achieving a goal. CHALLENGE HER will provide an opportunity for students to discover
role models and to become aware of alternatives which will allow them to break out of the cycle
of dependence.
.
Written with 5th - 12th graders in mind, it will mesmerize an audience of any age, as the play
explores the stories of historical and contemporary women including: Mary Shadd Cary, the
first Black female editor of a newspaper who recruited Black soldiers for .the Union Army;
Anna Ella Carroll, a secret member of Abraham Lincoln's cabinet who conceived the battle
strategy for the Union Army's first victory; and Sarah Edmonds one of the four hundred women
who disguised herself as a man and fought during the Civil War. Schools participating in the
program receive learning manuals that will help teachers develop in-class instruction around the
play's theme.
The CHALLENGE HER performance schedule plays: Monday through Friday at 10:00 am
and 11:30 am from February 28 through March 18, 1994, at Queens Theatre in the Park. A
Sunday family matinee is will play on March 13, 1994 at 2:00pm.
CHALLENGE HER is presented by Queens Council on the Arts in association with Artsgenesis and Queens Theatre in
the Park. Funding has been provided by ~e New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, the Queen's delegation of
the New York City Council, the Queens delegation of. the New York State Legislature, the Natural Heritage 'Trust,
Queens Borough President Claire Shulman, and NYNEX ..
