lte of almost everyone at her residential care facility, Helen uses her past experience as
ia manager to help the staff clear the dining-room and fold the laundry every day. She loves
'la and will drink it all day. In fact, she will ask for a Coke from almost anyone who crosses
. She has a loving, supportive family who visit and share all their experiences, in spite of
usion. Helen has great difficulty making rational decisions but she is almost obsessive about
lting decisions. They must be just right and in her picture, they are.

BIRDS IN WINTER
Painting by Barbara Goss
Birdwatching and bird feeding are popular pastimes all across the nation. In some
areas, birds Ihal were formerly limited to more southern climates can now remain
year-round because bird feeders and urbanized landscapes provide them with the
food and cover they need to survive the colder months. With very little effort, you can
transform your city street, suburban yard, or country garden into a thriving habitat for
wildlife. In winter, well-stocked bird feeders will attract a wide range of birds such as
cardinals, chickadees, blue jays, and goldfinches 10 your yard. Keep the
feeders stocked with sunflower seeds, millel, niger (thistle) seed, and suet. Birds do
not become dependent on Ihese food supplies - keep it up if you want to see these
birds up close year round.

"SKYLINE WINTERLANO"
CREA TED IN ACR1'UC BY MICHAEL YOUNG FOR THE GREATER KANSAS CITY DIVISION OF THE AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION
i'F
.~
The twenty-first in a series of Kansas City area Landmark Holiday Cards features a wintry Kansas City skyline. In
the foreground children full of the holiday spirit frolic on a snow covered hill in Penn Valley Park. Unioll Station, a
true Kansas City Landmark, is very prominent in this scene.
Union Station was designed by renowned Chicago architect, Jarvis Hunt, and opened on October 31, 1914.
Despite efforts to control cost, the actual cost of construction for the building was $5.7 million. The entire project
including right-of-way, grading, bridges, underpasses, rail yards, and other necessary improvements totaled $50
million. Unparalleled by anything within hundreds of miles, Union Station became the third largest rail station in the
world transporting 260 trains and carrying up to 28,000 passengers a day.
The facade of the station is a modified French Renaissance style, finished in gray-white Bedford limestone and
New England granite. Three great arched windows began above the second story level of the ticket lobby and
looked out over the plaza. Inside, the marbled walls of the ticket lobby rose ninety feet from the marble floor to a
flat plaster ceiling rich in ornamental relief of bright red, blue and gold with two chandeliers weighing 3,000
pounds each. A huge clock, six and one-half feet in diameter, hangs from the arch high above the passage between
the Grand Hall and the huge north waiting room. The lobby, almost the size of a football field, was flanked by
three-story wings that appeared low by comparison. The waiting room stretched 450 feet north over the train yard
and could hold 10,000 people at one time.
