Draft Press Statement with Demirefand Ecivit

President Demirel, Prime Minister Ecevit, and I had a very good set of meetings today. I look.
fotward to another conversation with the Prime Minister this afternoon. We spoke., of course,
about the recent earthquake and the ongoing effort to help the victims. I again expressed
America's sorrow and our readiness to do whatever is necessary to help Turkey's efforts.
We also spoke today about the coming OSCE swnmit and the opportunity it affords to advance
our common agenda.
It is fitting that in the flnal year of the 20th century,. Turkey is·hosting a summit of 54 nations,

determined to bui1d a Europe that is for the first time in history undivided, democratic and at
peace. Turkey's efforts to build peace at home and abroad wiJl be key to meeting all the

We spoke about the hopeful progress in buiiding cooperatiol} between Turkey and Greece. [I
expressed my hope that the coming talks on Cypruswilllead·to an end to its division, with real
security for all its people.]
We discussed the importance of sustaining the effort to integrate Russia with Europe as a stro~g,
stable democratic nation, and our shared concern that the tragic violence in Chechnya is an
impediment to that goal.
We s·poke about our shared interest in energy security for the Caspian region. Let me reaffrrm.
America's determination to make the Baku-Ceyhan pipeline a reality and my appreciation for the
leadership of President Demirel and others toward that goal. .
I
Finally, we discussed Turkey's progress in deepening its democracy and strengthening respect
for human rights. There has been momentum in the last few years, and indeed the last few

months. I urged continued progress, especially in the area'offreedom of exP,ression. And l
reaffirmed our strong support for Turkey's European Union candidacy as it moves forward in all
these areas.
Mr. President, Mr. Prime Minister, thank you once again for your friendship and your
commitment to our alliance.
