Description
An account of the resource
This collection deals with records regarding Lithuania during the Clinton administration. Located on the eastern shore of the Baltic Sea in Northern Europe, Lithuania proclaimed its independence from the Soviet Union on March 11, 1990. Responsive records regarding the newly independent country include letters, memoranda, drafts, Presidential messages, emails, cables, and news articles. The records center around Lithuania’s economic development; the desire to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), the European Union (EU) and the World Trade Organization (WTO); the controversial Williams Oil deal; and Holocaust-related issues. There is a great deal of crossover of Clinton-era documents dealing with the Baltic States, and therefore research into the records of Estonia and Latvia is recommended for a more rounded perspective of the region.

An account of the resource
This collection consists of White House Office of Record Management (WHORM) files that contain correspondence, memoranda, and speeches related to the Northern Ireland Peace Process. WHORM records contain correspondence from congressional members, the public, and Irish-American social organizations. The correspondence and memoranda contain suggestions, ideas, and concerns for the President regarding the Northern Ireland Peace Process. The letters talk about the concern for peace, the Human Rights Violations, a possible Special Envoy, and possible meetings with Gerry Adams President of Sinn Féin. There is correspondence in support of appointing George Mitchell as Special Envoy for Investments & Economic Initiative in both the Republic and the North. The records also contain numerous letters supporting the president for all his efforts and hard work and correspondence from the President thanking everyone for their support of him. This collection consists of Automated Records Management System and Tape Restoration Project emails that contain office correspondence concerning the Irish Peace Process. A majority of the emails come from NSC email accounts. These NSC account emails include press guidance and drafts of the 1998 National Security Strategy Report. Also, included are emails from the scheduling office concerning the President’s and First Lady’s trips to Ireland and Northern Ireland in 1995 and 1998. The records of the National Security Council (NSC) in the collection consist of correspondence related to the Irish peace process. These correspondence are from members of the House and Senate, the public, and Irish-American social organizations. The collection also includes administrative paperwork related to decision memos and correspondence tracking. Cables in the collection reflect reporting from newspapers, television, and radio; and review events related to the peace process. Cables also reflect reporting from Belfast and London on the positions of Sinn Féin, Fianna Fail, Social Democratic and Labor Party (SDLP), Ulster Unionist Party (UUP), Ulster Democratic Party (UDP), Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF), Provisional Irish Republican Army (PIRA), Progressive Democrat Party (PDP), Progressive Unionist Party (PUP), and others. Email generally consist of discussions of scheduling, correspondence response, and document tracking.

An account of the resource
This collection consists of records concerning the Clinton Administration’s response to the Columbine High School shooting on April 20, 1999. Over the course of several hours two heavily-armed students killed 12 classmates and a teacher and wounded 23 others before taking their own lives. The records include agendas, articles, cables, emails, letters, memos, press releases, public statements, schedules, speeches, and transcripts. The subject matter includes the Administration’s first responses and follow up, both in policy and strategy; recommended phone calls to victims’ families and local government officials; and speech texts for President Clinton, Mrs. Clinton, Vice President Gore, Education Secretary Richard Riley, and Attorney General Janet Reno. Reaction to the massacre also resulted in a higher emphasis on dealing with the issues of school violence and weapons legislation to include several high-profile conferences on youth violence.

Mrs. Hillary Rodham Clinton
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Ave. NW
Washington, D.C. 20500-2000
Dear Mrs. Clinton:
It was several months back that you responded to my request for an in person " face to face" interview on
women and children, by saying that you would consider a request. I have been thinking about what I would
like to ask you, and have focused my thoughts now. I wanted to wait until after the election, and I felt that
there was no question that the Clinton-Gore ticket would win, and also until my book 101 Ways To Get Your
Progressive Issues On Talk Radio would be ready to go to print so I could personally give you a copy.
I was very impressed and moved by your speech at the Convention, and I would like to use some of the
themes you discussed. I would like to do an interview focused on your experiences with women and children
both in America and abroad, and how the Clinton adminisuation has helped women and families. Your
experiences in meeting women from around the country and the world would make this a particularly rich
interview. You're work with breast cancer, tobacco, and the administration's family leave act, earned income
tax credit, immunization for children as well as other initiatives that are so important for women. 1 would like
to ask you what you want to focus on during the NEXT four years. It would be great to discuss some of your
experiences during your travel here and in Europe and Asia as well.
In addition, I am enclosing a tape of an additional radio show I host for The Agency For International
Development on the program Operation Days Work in Norway. It is a wonderful program, and I gave the
President the tape and some information on it during my recent interview with him. It would be great to use
the "bully pulpit" of the administration for a program like this. I was extremely impressed by it when we
were in Norway broadcasting. It could be used like a 'Lessons without Boarders" sponsored by AID.
Thank you for considering an interview.
Sincerely,
Ellen Ratner
P.S. It Takes A Village made me think of other Mrs. Clinton books I would like to read. Although I am sure,
you get thousands of ideas from everyone, my two-cents worth is a book that would be a 1990's Profiles In
Courage. It would be wonderful for you to tell the story of women you have met who arc doing amazing
things. Ms. Oseola McCarty, who you met from Mississippi who gave her life savings for scholarships, or
women you have met who are raising children alone and going to school who are involved in church and
community to women who have started organizations or are fighting cancer with courage.

I spoke with you on the phone a while ago about the letter that I had sent to Mrs.
Clinton twice to the special zip code -- "2000". Enclosed is a copy of the letter 1
originally sent to Mrs. Clinton which I somehow think you didn't receive. Also included
is a book for you, a book for the President, and a short note for the President.
Hope you enjoy the book.
