Description
An account of the resource
This collection consists of records related to Liberation Theology, Mireya Moscoso, and Panama Safe Haven. It consists solely of emails most of which are in the public domain, such as media reactions and summaries, press briefings, news wire reports, and news articles. The bulk of the emails pertain to the transfer of the Panama Canal and Canal Zone from the United States to Panama in 1999. Liberation Theology is a combination of Christian theology and moral concerns over political and socio-economic oppression. Liberation Theology originated in Latin America during the 1950s and 1960s in response to widespread poverty under military dictatorships. Mireya Moscoso was the first female President of Panama from 1999-2004. Panama Safe Haven refers to the relocation of Cuban refugees from overcrowded migrant camps at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base to Panama in 1994
