Bankers of note during the Clinton Administration - Collection Finding Aid

Description

This collection consists of correspondence, memoranda, reports, faxes, talking points, briefing papers, and lists. The major bankers dealt with in the records include John S. Reed, Sanford “Sandy” Weill, Thomas Labrecque, Dennis Weatherstone, Walter Shipley, and Hugh McColl, Jr. During Clinton’s presidency McColl and Weill engineered the two most significant mergers—Travelers Group combining with Citicorp and NationsBank uniting with BankAmerica—that contributed to the gutting of the Glass-Steagall Act. Substantive material in these papers dealing with the role bankers might have played in the general “anything goes” financial climate of the times and the onset of a severe recession in the 21st century would have to be viewed as negligible.
